Not Too Impressed

I purchased this hob in October 2006 and here I am in March 2008 thinking of binning it. It hasn't stood up to the occasional usage of having a heavy pot of potatoes, curry, etc on it as the plastic casing has cracked open on three sides and is now bordering on dangerous to use. In addition, there are other makes out there which have a greater temperature range than this one and cheaper.

I have this for over a year. I like it.It cooks rapidly , much faster than my gas hob. The timer setting feature is brilliant for cooking anything with liquid in as I go off and forget about it as it turns itself off. No more burnt pots for me! It was meant to complement the gas stove but has now taken its place as the main cooker! My teenagers sons like it too mainly because its so easy to clean!

Excellent, but not for simmering

I didn't need this item but fancied trying the technology.Currently I use gas but have great trouble in getting the flame so low that I can have pans on a low simmer without burning, even with heat diffusers.The beauty of this product is the power it can put into heating pans. To say it's fast is a little unhelpful for readers. As an example, I can take 1 litre of very cold water to a fast boil in 5 minutes 30 seconds. That might seem slow - but try on your current hob to see how it compares.There are two settings - "Heat" and "Fry". Each has 7 temperature settings - from 120C to 240C in 20C steps for "Fry" and from "Keep Warm" to "High" for "Heat". The difference between "Heat" and "Fry" seems to be that the latter stops the heating process once the temperature is reached, while the former just blasts away.240C on "Fry" was amazing. Using gas I normally pre-heat a cast-iron frying pan for about 10 minutes and then fry. With this induction hob, 30 seconds at 240C and the oil coating on the pan was starting to smoke. Oops - quickly pop in the oil and the chicken, and leave undisturbed for the chicken to brown. However within 30 seconds the chicken was starting to blacken. Great for rare steaks but a bit fierce for colouring chicken. I now use 180C or 200C for better results.I then tried the simmer test. A tin of baked beans in a small stainless steel pan. I put it on "Keep Warm" and left it for 5 minutes thinking that it would gently warm the beans. Nope - it was a fast boil and slightly caught on the bottom.I then tried the pressure cooker. Full heat to get to pressure - very fast - then "Keep Warm" for 15 minutes. It worked fine, but there was a slight catching of the food on the bottom - I've never had that before with gas.So this item is fantastic if you want more heat and faster cooking. Really no good for the very gentle simmer. I hate to think what would happen if I left a casserole for 2 hours.Clearly you can only use certain pans - cast iron, and some stainless steel (if magnetic). Ceramic, pottery, aluminium etc are no-go.If the unit has no pan on it for a minute it turns itself off which is helpful. It also has a timer (up to 10 hours in minute intervals).It is very light and comes with a useful length power cable - about a metre.Overall - very good if you want more, rather than less, heating. Brilliant for getting pans up to heat quickly and for intense frying. No good for slow simmering.I wouldn't be without it now. I haven't had it long enough to comment on reliability and I wish I'd read the other reviews first - especially as I think I need one with a lower minimum temperature setting.
